Defining Moments

When I was in the seventh grade, it was an awkward, weird time for me. I was far from pretty, with one bad perm after another, glasses and several extra pounds. I had friends, many of whom I maintain friendships with to this day, but at the time I wasn't quite sure where I belonged. I wasn't super-popular, I wasn't quite completely nerdy, and I was quiet, shy and introverted. (Wow, have I come a long way! :D )

My escape was music. I played piano and sang as much as I could. I sang in church choir, in the car and at home, in my room. But my favorite place to sing and truly escape was the swing in my parents' backyard. Nearly every afternoon after school, I'd head there with my dual-cassette boombox. (Later I got fancy and had a cassette/CD player.) It was there that I found my voice, singing along with my favorite singers, such as Madonna, Debbie Gibson, Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, Michael Jackson, Elton John, and...

...Whitney Houston.

Whitney's voice transported me. And the more I sang along with her, the better I got. I had a similar mezzo-soprano range, so it was great practice to sing with her. I realized that singing was something I would always NEED to do, like breathing. My identity was forming, my true self emerging. And music and singing were at my core. My family already knew and my parents encouraged and supported me in all my musical attempts. But at school, it isn't that easy when you're shy and unsure.

One day, during P.E., it was a no-dress-out day where the coach allowed us to just get our exercise in by walking the campus yard. A few friends and I stopped to rest and talked for awhile. Somehow, my cousin Kevin convinced me to sing something for the group to hear. I was reluctant and shy, but came around after their encouragement. I sang Whitney's "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and I felt, for the first time, that I was staking a claim to something. I was becoming Ami, the singer. It's a risky thing to open yourself up like that and show your innermost self, but at the same time, it's something you WANT to show. And bless their hearts, they loved it.

We all have defining moments in our lives. And if we're lucky, we have the presence of mind to recognize when they're happening. This was a defining moment for me, for sure. After that P.E. class, the news spread. People stopped me and asked me to sing. I was no longer in the shadows. I had an identity. My classmates, friends and the whole world, it seemed, welcomed this information, this previously-hidden part of myself.

I could sing, and the world knew it. Well, my little world, anyway. ;D

After that, I simply blossomed and happily grew more into this identity. I sang all throughout high school, in Literary trio, solo, and in our school's show choir. I sang solos in church. I sang in weddings. I just sang. And to this day, I am never happier than when I'm singing. It will always be at the center of who I am.

So that leads me back to Whitney. Her music helped me come out of my shell. Everything happens for a reason, and it was not by accident that her music first fell upon my ears, was imitated by my voice, and settled to make its home in my heart. She was one of my first and most powerful influences, musically. She inspired me.

She died Saturday. And the whole world is buzzing about it. But very little is being said about the huge talent she shared with us, the musical legacy she leaves us, and her value as an artist. Most people are diminishing her life to be solely about her drug addiction. That's sad to me. She was so much more than that. Maybe not to everyone. But she was to me. Small things become big things. A music note becomes a song, a song becomes an album. And a musician, singer or artist, when influential to you at a critical time in your life and development, becomes a part of you forever.

I've been observing people on Facebook in the couple days since her death. I read someone say, "Don't mourn her."
"You don't know her personally."
"Move on."
"She wasn't a good role model."
"She was just a junkie."
And now I've even started seeing pictures of soldiers' coffins, draped with flags, with a caption that says, "Whitney who?"

Wow.

No one did this a few weeks ago when Etta James died. Was it because Etta didn't have a drug problem? Etta (and rightfully so) received love, adoration and recognition. And people openly mourned her passing. Does Whitney's alleged drug problem make her trash, unworthy of compassion? I don't think so. Everybody has their problems. Their addictions and demons. It doesn't have to mean those things define them and what they bring to the world.

Of course all lives are important. Soldiers' lives are very important. EVERY life is important. It's not a competition between Whitney Houston and every.other.person who suffered, struggled or died. No, everyone isn't going to make the news. And that's ok. Don't diminish what she was just because she's all over your TV and you don't think that's fair to everyone else who has died. I'm totally fine with not making the news when I die. I haven't contributed talent, defined what music would become for generations after me, and had an impact on billions of people. I'm ok if I go quietly. :D

Whitney Houston was one of the great artists of my generation. Her music and style contributed to our culture, our society. She was a role model for me, growing up, both with her then-clean, Christian lifestyle and her musical influence. She paved the way for many female African-American singers. She was the most-awarded female act of all time. She was truly a pioneer for today's R&B, pop and gospel genres, and the ripples of her influence continue in the music of many great artists today. So no one should dare say she wasn't a good role model. She influenced me, I looked up to her, and I didn't grow up to do drugs, drink or participate in crime. Score one for Whitney!

I don't care how many drugs she did or how many poor lifestyle choices she made, she deserves credit, recognition and RESPECT for what she did for music. You don't have to even like her music to appreciate her as an artist and the contributions she made. She is not solely her poor choices and mistakes. She is so much more than that. She deserves to be so much more than that.

And I can totally mourn her. No, I didn't know her personally. You don't have to know someone to mourn them. To mourn the void they are leaving. To mourn what they COULD have been. When someone's music has an impact on me, I feel it deep within my soul. Music is not just "fluff" to me. It's not just something in the background of life. It IS life. It's ingrained in me. And Whitney will always be a part of that. So I will mourn that she is gone, that her life didn't turn out differently, and I will mourn that the voice that impacted BILLIONS is now silent. I will mourn her openly, defend her without apology.

She shouldn't be judged. No one knows her circumstances. None of us really knows *anything*. All we need to know is that she was a monumental and crucial figure in music, someone whose legacy will remain long after we're gone. That's something to celebrate, not condemn.

I will always look back on Whitney's earlier career with very fond memories. I will always appreciate and respect her as a singer. I will always be sad that she couldn't overcome her troubles, her demons and go on to do greater things. But I will always, always celebrate her music. And I will always be grateful that her music was with me during a defining moment in my life. I will always be PROUD to say that Whitney Houston's music is forever a part of me, my culture, my generation and my heart.

Grits Cafe

Brian and I went out to eat at Grits Cafe in Forsyth to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. We have eaten there before, and it tends to be one of those "it's a special occasion" places to eat. The food, atmosphere and service are so amazing, I thought Grits Cafe deserved its own blog post.

It's Southern cuisine "with flair," so that means they prepare foods that are definitely rooted in Southern recipes, but they somehow reinvent the food to take on new, scrumptious characteristics. From their website:

"Grits Café’s menu focus is traditional southern food, not exactly like Mom used to make, adding creativity and flair by fusing old and new ideas. Many appetizers and entrees spotlight local produce, seafood and cheeses, with a touch of Cajun, Southwest and Asian influence thrown in to keep things interesting. The flavors are trendy and unique, and closely rival the artistic detail paid to the presentation of each plate. The wine list features a number of handcrafted boutique wines produced in limited quantities, many not readily available in other areas of the country."

It's beyond comprehension. Just look at it.

We had mentioned to our server (the amazing Annie) that it was our anniversary, so she surprised us with this special anniversary dessert, on the house!

I can hardly believe fifteen years have gone by. On February 8, 1997, I married my best friend and soulmate. We celebrated our fifteenth anniversary today.

Words can hardly express what he means to me.

But here are a few I found that come pretty close.

What a happy fifteen it's been.

I love you, Brian. Thank you for being my dream come true.

Yesterday, I saw the most amazing sky I have ever, ever seen.

Pale blue, blanketed in puffy clouds. Layers, stacks, staircases of clouds, with brilliant, gleaming sunlight shining through. Shadows and light, so gorgeously playing chase. I had my camera with me, not even an arm's reach away, yet I did not grab it to photograph this sky. It's not that I didn't think to; I did. But I was too captivated, fixed, riding in the passenger seat of the car as Brian drove us to Oglethorpe. And this sky was one for my mind's eye to cherish. Somehow, it didn't seem my camera's lens could have captured its splendor.

We were on our way to the funeral of one of the most amazing women I've ever had the honor to know. Mrs. Linda Beckum, Brian's Great Aunt, who also happened to be our beloved English teacher from high school. She passed away after a long battle with cancer. We were both devastated to learn of her passing. People like Mrs. Beckum are a precious rarity. Her life, her wit, her intelligence, talents, kindness and grace--were all gifts to those who knew her. She accepted people as they were, yet encouraged them to grow even more into themselves. Into their true selves. And to celebrate those true selves.

This was no accidental sky.

It was there to get my attention.

Mrs. Beckum was brilliant with words. It was as if this sky held every word she'd ever spoken. I felt immersed in its brilliance and beauty. I felt her spirit. The shimmering sunlight through the layers of clouds felt like a beacon, an invitation for me to release my sadness and watch it float away. It felt like a promise, a reassurance of renewal. And that while I was not ready for her life to end, this reassurance told me that I could walk through an end to a new beginning.

Her service was beautiful. She had prepared some hymns, passages and Bible verses that she specifically wanted shared. It was so deeply, meaningfully her. We all felt her presence there with us, and that was so comforting.

When we went to the graveside, a breeze began to move around us. It was uplifting, like her spirit was there, dancing among us. It made me smile through my tears. She never wasted a day, never wasted a chance to help or influence someone. Even through the pain and exhaustion of her illness. Right to the end, she gave of her time and talents. She planted so many seeds in her students, friends, family and community. These seeds form, scatter and begin to grow. They have grown in me, and I hope to pass them on as well. This is her legacy to everyone whose life was blessed by her, touched by her, influenced by her.

I have heard the saying, "The bigger your heart, the bigger your life" before, and so I know Mrs. Linda Beckum had a big, big life. She lived her purpose and passed her gifts on to so many. She would want us to see life's beauty and promise, and in doing this, she is with us. Always.

I am so glad I did not photograph that sky's splendor. My soul will always remember the view.

2011.
Wow, what a year.

A year full of lots of things.

Loss.
Of life.
Of focus.
Of health.
Of quiet.
Of joy.
Of comfort.

I took a break from scrapbooking. It was good for me. But I miss it and am ready to get back.

There were some gains as well.

I spent the majority of the year with a camera growing out of my face. I loved it.

I strengthened old friendships and gained new ones. I am grateful for that.

I grew closer to my husband and with each year, seem to somehow love him more, although it seems impossible because I already love him with all my being.

Together, we realized some things about how and where we want to live that will help us move forward into the new year, and set the tone for the next phase of our life together.

My heart grew to make room for more kittybabies, precious lives that the world would otherwise just discard, and I love them like they are my children. They have helped give me focus and purpose.

I had a lot of unhappy times, uncomfortable times, times I felt violated by things I couldn't control. I lost quiet, peace and at times, sanity. But in the moments of distress, of anger, of discord, I still felt little Divine whispers. Little reassurances that this is just part of the journey. That I should focus on the good, and I should go where the peace is.

In 2012, I want to go where the peace is. I want to feel it within myself, and project it back to the world. This is not a New Year's resolution. It's more of an approach to life. I fully believe that when you put positive goodness out there, it comes back to you. I am inviting it with open arms and an open heart. I know this will not always be easy, and sometimes it may not even be possible, but it's not going to stop me from trying.

I am ready to start fresh and leave so many things, so much negativity behind me.

So, come on, 2012. A whole new year. A fresh start. New footsteps on a new path to where the peace is.

We Came, We Saw, We Christmased

Just now getting to posting our Christmas pictures! We had a fun weekend with family. Headed down to Mama and Daddy's house for Christmas Eve chili and hot dogs, then came back home and returned to their house for Christmas Day. Here are a few of my favorite pictures of Christmas Weekend!

On Christmas Eve, before we left, Brian and I opened our gifts to each other. He got me a Fujifilm Instax 7S!! I really wanted one, so this was awesome!!

And I got him a lighted cover for the Kindle he got a few weeks ago! He loved it!

Then, on to Mama and Daddy's!

I had lots of time to try out my new Instax! (I'll post another time and show the pictures I got from it!)

Christmas Eve chili in a pot that belonged to our Maw. Made us feel her sweet spirit there with us.

This is such a good movie. You should watch it. Brian got his own copy! Yay!

We had a wonderful Christmas. Hope you and your family did, too!

December Daily Wrap-Up

Wow, this month has absolutely flown by! It hardly seemed time for Christmas and then, Christmas was over! The clock and calendar have brought us here again, to his birthday.

He is, of course, my very best friend. He balances me, motivates me, supports me, and loves me through both the shadows and the sunshine. I am beyond blessed to have this wonderful man in my life and to call him my husband.

Today, I celebrate him and everything he is to me, which is, well, everything.

Happy, Happy Birthday, Brian! I love you beyond measure.

December Daily

Happy December!

I am participating in a project called December Daily. It began as a scrapbooking thing, where you take a picture each day in December, of something meaningful to you that tells a small (or big) story for that day in your life. (It's kind of like Photo/Project 365, but concentrates on the month of December only.) I will likely end up creating a mini album to hold all these photos/stories, but am planning on sharing them here as well. Finding a moment each day during such a busy month can really help slow down the hustle-bustle and bring more joy and thankfulness to the season.

OK, now to get caught up with my blog posts! I've been taking a December Daily picture everyday, but am just going to blog them in batches to make it easier.

December 1.
My warm toes in these awesome fleece booties that Mama and Daddy gave me at the start of the cold weather this year. They have seriously barely left my feet! I love them and you can't feel a single snippety miniscule draft of cold air!

December 2.
A rare and spontaneous early supper at Carrabba's. We always get the filet marsala, garlic mashed potatoes, and sauteed broccoli. Shutcho mouth. Soooooo good. If I ever have to pick a final meal, this right here is high on my list. And it was so nice for us to get out for a dinner together, so we really enjoyed it.

December 3.
I was craving some peppermint (I tend to only want it around Christmas) so we got a big container of mini candy canes from Sam's. They're so cute and pretty with twinkly Christmas lights in the background, as in my picture here.

December 4.
On Sunday, December 4th, Brian and I went to do a photoshoot of our friend, Lera's daughters and we had so much fun! We did the photos at Auchumpkee Creek Covered Bridge in Thomaston, GA. It was beautiful!

December 5.
A Hipstamatic pic of a little Christmas house I made. It looks so cheery on our mantel, surrounded by pine garland and red berries.

December 6.
Got out the stack of Christmas CDs to make some playlists.

This season goes so quickly. I think this year might be going the fastest pace yet. December Daily is really helping me to slow down and notice little moments of celebration in each day. Sometimes the little things do mean the most. More December Daily in a few days!

The 2011 Georgia National Fair

It's crazy what the love of photography will make you do. I am not known for my love of going to the fair. In past years, it has been hot, crowded, aggravating and just plain unpleasant. So I was surprised by my desire to go this year. Brian and I lead a photowalk group on Facebook, and we try to have two to three photowalks per year. In between the walks, we have photo scavenger hunts, just for fun and to keep everyone in practice.

Anyway, there was some interest in doing a mini walk at the fair, so we planned one. We originally planned for last Thursday, but the weather was awful (high winds, rain, lightning, thunder) so we postponed the walk to Friday. Friday's weather was absolutely gorgeous. Brilliant, blue skies, sun, and temps in the 70s. Lots and lots of wind, though. But that was ok.

We had a small group, unfortunately, due to the weather-related reschedule, so it was just me, Brian and my sister, Ginger. We had a really fun day! My faith in the fair was restored and I actually *enjoyed* myself! The pull of photographing all those colors, the activity, the people, the rides, and especially the night photography--made me do it and I'm glad I did. Here are some of my favorites that I took at the fair.

I may have a slight obsession with Ferris Wheels. And pretty lights. And Ferris Wheels. :D

Somewhere Vast And Amazing

On September 10th, Brian and I had the wonderful job of shooting our first wedding! Our friends, Clint and Elizabeth, asked us to photograph their special day and while we were very nervous, we were so excited and happy to be entrusted with such an important job.

The wedding was absolutely beautiful! Here are a few of my favorites from the day:

Threads That Are Golden

My Maw (grandmother) died last Sunday morning. She was 88. It was sudden, and at the same time, not. She has had a very rough couple years, and has endured a lot of suffering. She held on for us, for her family. She knew we did not want to let her go.

My sweet sister, Ginger, wrote a beautiful tribute to Maw's life here. I cannot begin to say it better, so please read her post. It is perfect.

She was not able to get around like she had in the past, but she was determined to dance. And dance she did! Here she is, with a little help, cuttin' a rug!

I have so many pictures of her that I could share, but these are some of the more recent ones.

Ginger, Brian and I went to see her a week before she died. She was having a bad day that day. She couldn't get her words out the way she wanted, and she was getting frustrated. She kept saying "Mamamamama" like she was trying to say, "Mama". Ginger and I kept asking her if she meant our Mama, like maybe she was worried about something. We reassured her that Mama was fine, but she continued to say it. It was only later, at her funeral, that our Aunt Brenda told me that she was certain that Maw thought I was her mother that day, standing over her bed. Maw's Mama was named Emily, and she had red hair, even styled with bangs like mine. She thought I was her Mama. Hearing that was really humbling for me. I hope I brought her some comfort, thinking that her Mama had come to see her, to help her let go.

That Sunday morning that she died, she went peacefully to sleep. Her beautiful, caring, loving and immense heart stopped beating. She could finally rest, finally be free. No more pain. No more suffering.

But we are left here, without her. It has been so hard on all of us. Maybe we're selfish. We know we are blessed to have had her as long as we did. We are truly grateful for that. At the same time, though, that is what makes it so hard to let her go. She was such a constant, such a fixed point in all of our lives.

I posted on Ginger's blog about Maw. I said that Maw is our Golden Thread. She binds us all together and back to her. She would want us to live and love life the way that she did, to continue our journey, knowing she is waiting for us at the end. We will do this. We will honor her, every day. We will continue her legacy.

Often in my life, when I need to process or deal with something like loss, I turn to music. I am reminded of these words from a Tori Amos song and they comfort me. We wanted Maw to hold on so long. We didn't want her to go. I feel like these words are coming through as a message from her to us. She will never be truly gone. She will find us. She will wait for us. And she is our Golden Thread, never breaking.

Until I see you again, Maw, I will keep you in my heart. I will find your spirit in the world around me. I will weave your Golden Thread through the Tapestry of my life. <3

Spark

Today is my sweet Mama's birthday! She is my spark, the lighter of my fire.

She taught me so much that aligns with this wonderful quote. She is my hero, she is full of fire and life. What an amazing role model she has been and continues to be.

On her birthday and always, I love and admire this amazing woman and I celebrate her. She is extraordinary.

How Beautiful It All Is

Today is my Daddy's birthday! He is amazing.

This art reminds me of him--his protection, guidance, and love for me and my brother and sister. He has shown and continues to show us how beautiful it all is. His devotion and love for his family are unyielding. Today, I celebrate this man and all he means to me.

In Praise And Celebration

Today is my big sister Ginger's birthday.

(That's her on the right--this photo is of us around 1980.)

Although there is a 10-year age difference between us, we always say we are twins born 10 years apart. We share thoughts, finish each other's sentences and are best friends. A few years ago, she gave me a book for Christmas, titled In Praise And Celebration Of Sisters and I adore it. There is a passage that reminds me of us, and of the bond we share. I thought I would share it today, in honor of her birthday:

"The bond between us was not made from flowers and loving sentiments - but sitting on each other's heads, borrowing each other's things, arguing in whispers in the early hours. From secrets, silly and serious, that had to be kept from Mum. From last-minute coaching for examinations - resentful and desperate. From shoutings and tears. From gigglings and raucous laughter. From plottings and from dire and dreadful threats and warnings.

What a great quote. And so perfect for this special day in particular--my Mama and Daddy's 46th Wedding Anniversary!

They are such a wonderful example of timeless love, devotion and the true meaning of happily ever after. Their love knows no bounds, and it is the canvas on which our family is painted. They have taught my sister, brother and me the meaning of commitment, of "for better or for worse".

Today, I honor them and am so grateful for all they have given me and my siblings. Mama and Daddy, I love you both so much and wish you many, many more years of happiness. Thank you for all you have given our family.

And I wanted to include this precious song because when I hear it, I think of them, and I think of my own marriage, which they laid the foundation for by setting the example they did. I think of strong marriages and true love. I think of forever.

This weekend is Black Kitty's 10th Birthday!

Black Kitty came to us back in 2002, when we lived in our apartment. She was about a year old at the time. She was hungry and pregnant. She kept coming around for several weeks, and we would feed her and love on her. When we were sure she didn't belong to anyone, we took her in. We kept saying "Look at this pretty black kitty" and that name stuck with her. She had her babies and we found homes for them. She has been with us ever since. When we moved into the house we're in now, she was the only cat. Beatrice came along next, then Sleepy, then Trudy, then Oliver. She has mothered them all and is so sweet and loving. We love our girl.

I made her a party hat for her special day.

Just a quick catch-up post. I wanted to share some pics we took at IKEA when we went on March 28th. Brian, Ginger and I drove up to IKEA Atlanta, and later, Billy met us for lunch and some shopping.

(Sort Of) Homemade Doughnut Holes

I came across a recipe over at Not So Homemade for doughnut holes and had to try it. I documented the process in pictures to share here today.

There are three ingredients. Seriously. You just need canned biscuit dough (any brand--I used Pillsbury Grands Homestyle Buttermilk), vegetable oil and powdered sugar. That's it!

To make, cut the biscuits into quarters. At this point, you can leave them as chunky wedges or roll them into balls.

While you're cutting up the biscuits, put a couple inches of vegetable oil into a sauce pan and heat on medium. (You can test the oil to see if it's hot enough by wetting your fingers and flicking a drop of water into the oil. If it sizzles, it's ready!)

Using a slotted spoon, gently place around 8-10 holes or wedges into the oil, being careful not to splatter yourself! Don't overcrowd the pan; the dough will at least double in size as it cooks. (If you're impatient and want them done quicker, you can use a larger pan. ;D)

Using the spoon, gently turn the dough balls until golden brown on all sides.

Since one can of biscuits makes approximately 30 doughnut holes, you'll need to prepare them in batches. Drain each batch on a plate lined with paper towels. Continue until they are all done and drained.

Place about 3/4 cup of powdered sugar in a lidded plastic container. After draining, place about 5 doughnut holes in the container, snap on the lid and shake to coat with powdered sugar. Continue in batches until all the holes are sugared.

You're done! Serve 'em up and enjoy! :D

1. I love to sing! It is ingrained in my soul, it is part of who I am and it always will be. It is like breathing--I need to do it to survive!!

2. I have psoriasis, which is an autoimmune disease that manifests symptoms on my skin. It is painful, debilitating and ugly.

3. I am completely, hopelessly addicted to Facebook. And I am not ashamed.

If the sheets are not pulled and tucked tightly and smoothly, I cannot and will not sleep in that mess. :D I fix it a few times a night. And then again in the morning. And sometimes during the day if I pass through and see it all wonky.

This is one of the first pictures we took together, a few months after we started dating. We were just starting our journey together. And while there were no plans set in stone, this is the picture of a beginning. The start of our future together. We didn't know what it would bring--the unconditional love, the lessons, the trials and joys. But we knew we would face it together.

I think we both knew, the night we met, that we would be together forever. It was an immediate feeling of familiarity in a stranger's eyes. A pulling, a longing and two souls instantly intertwined.

We have been married 14 years today. They have been wonderful years with a wonderful man. I look forward to many, many, many more.

Thirty-Four Means Celebrate More

Today is my 34th birthday. I have been celebrating all weekend, however. I read in the Birthday Rulebook that this is perfectly acceptable. I might continue the celebration all week!

On Saturday, our dear friends, Tia and Ken, came up for what Tia and I had deemed "Tia And Ami Day 2011". Her birthday is on January 17th, so we just sort of met in the middle and went out for a very nice dinner at Grits Cafe in Forsyth, GA. It was AMAZING!! Their tagline is "Southern Food With Flair" and it really was. Tia and I both had the Praline Chicken, which is pecan coated chicken, stuffed with forest mushrooms and spinach, with a goat cheese potato croquette. Yes. It was probably the best thing I've ever eaten. The wait staff was superb, and they even observed that we were celebrating a birthday (somehow they only noticed my birthday) and brought me a complementary dessert--chocolate cake with vanilla bean ice cream, with hot fudge sauce and a sprig of mint. Divine. Here is a collage of pics from the evening.

Then, on Sunday, my family had a wonderful birthday dinner for me! My Daddy made his awesome baked spaghetti and Mama made her should-be world-famous chocolate cake with homemade, cooked chocolate icing. It was awesome as usual!! Here are a few pics from that day:

Brian took today off to spend the day with me today, on my actual birthday. We slept really late, then he made pop tarts with candles (aww)! I had a lazy day and watched TV, listened to the rain and just enjoyed doing nothing. I got some beautiful cards from my family and Brian. Facebook told me it was my birthday and so many awesome people left me sweet birthday wishes on my wall (thanks, y'all!). Brian and I went out to get Chinese food for supper, grabbed a lottery ticket from Kroger (birthday luck?) and finished off the evening with some birthday apple pie and vanilla ice cream. Definitely an indulgent day!

Oliver

For a few months now, we have been trying to adopt out a kitten from our feral mama outside. We had been calling the kitten "Wee Kitten," although now he is 5 months old and not so wee anymore! Anyway, our good friends, Tia and Ken had offered to take him a couple weeks ago, but just as we were about to let him go, we realized that we were far too attached to him and loved him too much to let him go. He had us wrapped around his little claw. :D

We are those Crazy Cat People you hear about.

Anyway, many thanks to Tia and Ken for offering to give him a home! After we made the decision to keep him, we took him to the vet for his vaccinations and a checkup. He is healthy! We brought him inside, gave him a bath and now he's hanging out in our master bathroom. We named him Oliver Farnsworth Godfrey. He has to stay isolated from the other cats until we are sure his ear mites are gone (the vet gave him a one-dose, super-strong treatment for those, so they should be gone now). We also have Trudy, who is now 9 months old, and is possibly starting to go into heat. Although Oliver is young, his puberty could be triggered by contact with a female who is "of age". So, for the next couple weeks, he will stay separate from the girls (who are all spayed except for Trudy) and we will get him fixed. So, for now, he and the girls will take turns having "run of the house". He goes up, they come out and vice versa.

He is super-sweet, loving and calm. He is probably the most laid-back cat I've ever seen. It is hard to believe he came from a feral colony. Brian has been working with him since he was a baby, but he just seems to have a different demeanor than the others. He *wants* to be with people. And we want to be with him. He is precious!

With 2010 drawing to a close, I look back at it mostly with sadness. There were a lot of things this year that were tragic and brought struggle at times. And while I am in a bit of a funk going into the new year, I am trying my best to grasp a thread of hope to take me into 2011. I think I will just leave the year with this sentiment. If that doesn't fire up hope in your soul, I don't know what will.

Also, Nelly made me smile. :)

Christmas

Christmas has come and gone for another year. We spent the day with family, and it was the merriest Christmas I can remember in a long time! Everybody was cheery and we had a great Christmas Eve and Day together!

On Christmas Eve, we headed down to Mama and Daddy's house, about an hour away. Some sights that greeted us:

Mama and Daddy had fixed some awesome chili and hot dogs for Christmas Eve supper, which is our tradition. Daddy really outdid himself this year on the chili! It was the best chili evah!

We all opened a few presents:

Ginger got Mama a really huge bar of peppermint soap. We joked that it was as big as a phone, so Mama had to make a minty phone call. :D

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like...

Happy Fun Time For Kitties! :D Christmas decorations are the absolute best kitty toys. At least, they wish. All the pretties are going up at our house this week, and so far, the kitties are playing it cool. But I know they will be biting the garland and batting at the tree soon. :D

Here are a few pics I got as we get everything ready.

First, we were determined to get new curtains hung. Here is one window, with the new curtains from IKEA. We love them!

Next, Brian tried to put the Santa hat on Sleepy. She obviously didn't want to be Santa Paws and was having none of it. She flailed violently, hence the blurry arms here. But her face is beyond awesome. :D

Here's Brian, finished with one star (we're making two). I had a vision of big stars made from large dowel rods, lashed together with twine and wrapped with white lights. Brian made my vision a reality! We will probably put these on the porch.

Autumn Activities - Part Two

I remodeled my blog again. I like it so much better now! Hope you do, too. ;D

After our wonderful weekend in the mountains, we headed home on Monday, November 1st. We had been on the road maybe 30 minutes when we saw a sign that we had seen the previous Friday night, only this time it was daylight and well-lit. And we could see what was *behind* the sign: Goats On The Roof.

Say what?!

Yep, GOATS. Literally, ON THE ROOF. We promptly turned around and gleefully arrived at this wonderful place.

It's a series of buildings, specially-built for goats to live on the roofs. The buildings themselves consisted of a country store, an ice cream parlor, and a little restaurant. Normal stuff. Except there were goats. On the roof. :D

We thoroughly enjoyed walking around and visiting with the goats. Here are some pictures.

There is a pulley system in place where you can purchase some feed for the goats (from a machine similar to a gumball machine) and send it up to the goats. They LOVE this! :D

The different roofs are connected by bridges and walkways for the goats to travel.

Outside the ice cream parlor, you could talk to the "Goat Whisperer". :)

There were beautiful fall displays of pumpkins and gourds as well.

Some rude kids sent the little feed cup up to him empty. He was quite displeased and promptly did this:

Autumn Activities - Part One

It has been a busy Autumn for us!

Over Halloween weekend, we went to the North Georgia mountains, to Sky Valley!! Our dear friends, Tia and Ken, were kind enough to invite us to join them and stay three days in a wonderful mountain house with gorgeous autumn views of the mountains! It was so much fun! Brian and I haven't gotten away on a vacation since our HONEYMOON, nearly 14 years ago! My sweet sister, Ginger, house and cat sat for us so we could go. She's the best!!

Anyway, we took so many pictures! I took over 600 with the DSLR and Brian took several rolls of film on his Yashicas. Still waiting for those to come back. Here are a few of my faves from the weekend!

Here we are on the first morning there. We had just seen that gorgeous view for the first time, because we had arrived the night before, in darkness. We are happy mountain folk!! :D

Later that morning, we ate breakfast at the Cupboard Cafe. Seriously, the best breakfast ever!

Later, we walked around some antique shops. Brian and Ken had a rest outside in some rocking chairs. When I went to take their picture, Brian said to Ken, "Look at Ami" and this is the response I got. :D

On Sunday, we ventured out (and into North Carolina a bit) and ended up at Dry Falls. They. were. gorgeous!

We had SUCH a wonderful, relaxing trip! It was much-needed! On our way home, we discovered a wondrous place called Goats On The Roof. More on that in the next post. ;D

Kris

I remember joining Brian's family, some 17 years ago when we first started dating. I remember how he talked about this aunt -- his Aunt Kris -- who was so cool and awesome to hang out with. She was more than just an aunt, he had said. She was a friend, a confidante, and fiercely loyal. Soon after, I met her and she welcomed me with open arms. Since those early days, I have been proud to call Kris an aunt and a friend. Over the years, Brian and I became even closer to her and her husband, Phil. We all hung out, played cards, shopped, went to dinner together, house-hunted, helped each other and so much more.

A week ago today, on Monday, October 18th, Kris was taken from us far too soon, at the age of 49. She died suddenly and unexpectedly and it was a huge shock to us and all her family, friends, and her beloved Phil. Over the past week, Brian and I have been trying to accept her passing, but it's nearly impossible. She was so ingrained in our lives, so much a fixture that never wavered. She *couldn't* be gone.

But she is. Her funeral was Saturday, and that day was one of the saddest I've ever experienced. I just can't imagine a world without her in it. She was so caring, so generous, so friendly and kind. She loved to garden and take care of animals, especially her cherished horses. I know she would not want us to grieve. She would want us to carry on, to live our lives to the fullest, the way she lived hers.

So we will try. The sun won't shine as brightly without her here. The world is forever changed. But she would want us to remember and honor her by continuing our walk here, not in sadness, but in the joy that she brought us. That is her legacy to us. Her funny, sweet nature. Her talents and good taste. Her love and wisdom. Her good work and generosity. These are the things that we will take with us, and she will live on through them and in our hearts. Forever.

I came across this poem and couldn't believe how authentically "Kris" it was, and how I feel this is what she would want us to remember right now. I wanted to share it here.

 You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back,  or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.  
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,  or you can be full of the love you shared.

Summer's Last Stand

Whew. Y'all. Summer is not going down without a fight. Today is the last full official day of Summer, so Fall is just around the corner. Well, on the calendar, that is. It's still ridiculously hot here, hotter than average even for us (in Georgia). We should be in the low-to-mid 80s by now, but today? 95 freaking degrees.

Our driveway is starting to show some signs of Fall...

And the backyard longs to be covered in leaves...

And my Fall magazines and catalogs are arriving...

And beautiful, golden Fall light is coming into the house...

...but Fall is still more than just a day away. :(
I will still pull out the rest of my Fall decorations by the end of the week, though. And I will enjoy this week, as it is the main week for Fall premieres! Tonight, it's Glee!!

So, we will keep the air conditioning blasting, and decorate for and dream of those cool, crisp days of Fall.

I Can't See New York

I will never forget September 11, 2001. I was working at the Medical Center in a doctors' office. Brian also worked at the Med, and he had just dropped me off at my building. I got on the elevator with one of the doctors from my office and we rode up together. He mentioned that he had overheard on the radio that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I don't think it even registered to me at that point, and I sort of brushed it off like it was an accidental plane crash.

A terrorist attack never crossed my mind.

We got into the office, and the buzz about it began to grow. We turned on the TV and then the second plane hit. We stayed glued to it all day long. And we heard who they thought had done it. And we were learning how and why. To this day, I think we still are.

I will never, EVER forget that day. I will never forget the TV coverage that went all day that day, and all day for weeks afterward. The lives lost, the devastation.

Soon after, I was introduced to the music of Tori Amos (thanks, Melinda!) and the first album of Tori's that I bought was Scarlet's Walk. On it, there is a song called "I Can't See New York". It has always made me think of 9/11 from the first listen. Every year, on 9/11, I play it and remember all the people who died that day. I remember how helpless I felt that day, watching people die and suffer on TV and not being able to help them.

But I will never forget them.

Psoriasis Awareness Month

August is Psoriasis Awareness Month. I have had psoriasis since I was 18 years old. It started with a nickel-size patch on my scalp, and, over the years, has spread to cover most of my body. It's painful, debilitating and affects every aspect of my daily life. I also have psoriatic arthritis. This is also a very painful disease. When I'm not flaring up, the pain and discomfort are tolerable, but I still have to deal with the way it looks. I do this by staying covered year-round, even during hot Georgia summers. I have recently started wearing short sleeves out in public from time to time, so I am making progress.

People don't understand what it is, or they think it's contagious (it's not). They stare and ask rude questions. This makes it even more important to raise awareness. People need to know what this disease is. The general public needs to be able to look at a psoriatic's skin and just think, "oh, that's just psoriasis" like it's no big deal. Because the social stigma that comes along with it makes psoriasis that much harder on a person suffering from it. If you see us wearing short sleeves and our arms are pink and inflamed, don't bring attention to it. And certainly, don't be afraid of it. You can't catch it. It won't hurt you. Treat us no differently than you would any person. Think of our lesions as unwanted tattoos in which we had no say. People with tattoos are accepted in society; why can't psoriatics be? We should be, and it's time to take our freedom back.

I want to raise awareness and get more people involved in helping to find a cure. It's as easy as writing your legislators and telling your story about psoriasis. You may only know me or someone else who has it. You don't have to have the disease yourself to get involved and raise awareness. Even if we can't find a cure, we can at least educate people so they know what it is. When people are educated, they are empowered. One person at a time, we can make a difference in the lives of psoriatics everywhere. At the very least, we can wear our short sleeves out in public without giving it a second thought and without the fear of embarrassment.

In the last issue of Scrap n' Art e-zine, I created a bust for psoriasis. It was a project exclusively designed for our July/August issue, and was an artistic way for me to tell my story. Here's a picture of it (click the picture to view larger):

There are several symbols I incorporated into this project. I can share a few with you here. First, the bust is split visually down the middle to symbolize a beautiful, disease-free side and an inflamed, psoriatic side. I used pieces of cardstock, glued on one-by-one, along with red and pink Glimmer Mists to represent the psoriatic side. The wings are there, one tethered and one free, to represent how having psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis is like being held back and imprisoned. The key represents my search for an effective treatment or cure. Those are just a few details. (More are in the issue!)

I got special permission from our Editorial Director, Candy Rosenberg (thanks, Candy!) to share it with you here and now. New Layouts!

I'm on break from projects for Scrap n' Art, so I've been scrapping a little just for fun!

Here's what I got done:

This cardboard "sun" is a divider that came in a box of new plates we bought recently. I thought it looked like a sun, so a little white and yellow paint, along with some Glimmer Mist, made it come to life! This is Ginger, acting silly with her birthday ice cream. She says it's because she hadn't had ice cream in a while, but I think it's just because she's crazy.

I made the teal fabric rosette and the orange pipe cleaner flower. (The organza lollipop flower is from an Etsy shop called "Milky Supplies".)

This layout is of Sleepy, a couple months ago. She had to wear a sweater while a sore on her neck healed (because she wouldn't leave it alone). She really hates this sweater.

I made the pipe cleaner flower.

And last, Beatrice. Just being weird. Enough said. :D

Again, I made the fabric rosette and the accordion flower.

Exciting News!

I had heard this rumored a few months ago, but last night, I saw for myself. We went over to The Shoppes At River Crossing, and saw that there will be a Joann Fabrics and Crafts Store coming in July! All I can say is IT'S ABOUT TIME. We have a Michael's, which is fine, even though it's kinda in the ghetto. But I have heard Joann is more like Hobby Lobby, and I prefer that. I still don't know why Warner Robins got the Hobby Lobby. :( Anyway, so, yay! I will have a Joann within 10 minutes of my house! That's closer than Michael's, and that's really exciting!

Got these pics with my iPhone last night as we drove by.

I was so excited, I let out a little yelp of glee and then proceeded to make up and sing a song to the new Joann building to the tune of Dolly Parton's "Jolene":

A sad day: Rue McClanahan died today, age 76.
She was a pioneer. Her character, Blanche Devereaux, paved the way for liberated women characters today, such as Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw (of Sex And The City). We have lost another shining light of talent.

Now there is one Golden Girl left. :(

Wacky Neighbors

Some of you may remember that I used to have a blog on MySpace. On it, I generally complained about my job (which I have since left, yay!) and talked about our crazy neighbors.

Since switching over to Facebook and devoting this blog to most things scrappy/crafty, I have neglected this part of my life. Well, last night, some events unfolded that made me want to document it for your (hopeful) enjoyment.

Here's a little backstory:
We live in a lake community, which is gated, and for the most part, we love living here. Well, recently, there have been some things that have made us think twice about it--burglaries, loud boom cars and just inconsiderate, loud people in general.

Anyway, across the street from our house, there is a rental house. This house has seen many, many odd (and a couple normal) characters through the years. In the seven years we've lived here, that house has had:

* a graffiti artist who used the backyard as his "studio," and plywood as his "canvas". Yeah. It was purty.

* a family with two small children, one of them being a girl of about 3 or 4, who loved to frolic naked all in their yard, and one time, our yard. Wow.

* a quiet family who didn't bother anyone and whom we absolutely LOVED. We didn't even know they were there. The best kind.

* and now, recently (a month ago), an odd couple moved in. They seriously act like they're on meth. I've seen Intervention, y'all. They might need one, for reals. Anyway, they don't seem to work, have cookouts randomly on weekdays in the middle of the day, and the dude tenant LOVES to ride his lawn mower. I mean, LOOOOOOOVES it. Rides it everyday if he can.

Last night, around 7 PM, he was outside moving his car. Oh yeah, they drive their cars all willy-nilly through their yard. Fun, fun. Well, he proceeded to drive his car directly into one of the posts that supports the carport. Yep, he crashed his own car into the house. He got out, looked ever-so-briefly at the damage, and then promptly got on his lawn mower and rode off towards the lake, where he stayed for a good two hours. He got back after 9 PM, and we are assuming went inside to pass out. Because y'all, that whole ordeal was clearly sponsored by Alcohol.

We are keeping an eye on them, because of their entertaining shenanigans, but also because they're just odd (and a little concerning). And we kiiiiiinda want to end up on the local news, being interviewed about living across from them after they're caught cooking meth or caught with their hands in some other form of Illegal Crazy. It's only a matter of time.

I don't ever remember a time that my Mama did not make a homemade birthday cake for me. Her cakes were sought after all over the county--she is a very talented cake decorator. Even to this day, for every birthday, I have a beautiful, delicious handmade cake to look forward to. How Sweet It Is that she started and continues this tradition.

Sugar-Free Strawberry Trifle

My Mama asked for a sugar-free strawberry trifle for Mother's Day, so I made her one. I had a couple people ask for the recipe, and it's really easy. Here it is, with pictures! :D (You can click the pictures to view larger if needed.)

You will need:
2 pounds (or 2 cartons) strawberries, rinsed, drained and chopped
1 (1.5 oz.) box Vanilla Instant Sugar-Free Jell-O Pudding Mix, prepared according to package
1 tub (16 oz.) Lite Cool Whip, thawed
1 sugar-free angel food cake (I used storebought), cubed

In a large trifle dish, begin layering as follows:
Half the cubed cake
Half the prepared vanilla pudding
Half the strawberries
Half the Cool Whip

Repeat layers until all ingredients are used. You should have enough to complete all four layers twice. Garnish top layer with sliced or whole strawberries if desired. Cover and refrigerate to chill at least 4 hours or overnight.

On Monday, Brian was off, so we ventured downtown to take some pictures. Despite the 457 mph winds. Wow, that wind was ridonculous.

Anyway, Brian shot with the new (old) Yashica TLR and I shot with the Sony DSLR. These are all pics I took, and are a few of my favorites from the day. You can click each to view larger.

We want to go back when the conditions aren't so hostile. Seriously, that wind was ugly. Can't wait to get the prints back from the Yashica! I'll be sure to scan them in and share the shots Brian got, too.

Weekend Update

We had a pretty good weekend. On Saturday, we went to the monthly LWW Scrappers Meeting, where I did a few demos on how to make cards. We had such a fun time! Here are some cards I got done to show at the meeting, and one I got done at the actual meeting.

It was a pretty fun weekend. Sunday we just hung out at home and got some rest, which is always my favorite kind of day. :D Looking forward to seeing family next weekend for Easter, and taking lots of pictures!!

Scrappy Saturday

Despite having The Cold That Would Not Die But Instead Morphs Into Some Kind Of Evil Bronchitis-Demon-Thing, I still managed to have a pretty fun weekend. On Saturday, we ventured out to the Create-n-Crop Event in Perry. Brian and I went, along with Kristi, her husband, Chris, and Linda.

They called it a "Paper Crafting Extravaganza," but once we got inside and walked around a bit, we discovered it was more of just a "Ganza" without the "Extra" part. We were underwhelmed, to say the least. It was very small, and took us under an hour to walk the whole thing, including stopping and looking and buying and taking our time. But we still had fun! I got a new Glimmer Mist, some Stickles and some ink! So it was worth the drive. But I am still looking forward to the bigger expo this summer in Duluth.

Here, we watched as a lady in a booth (where I bought all my goodies!) showed us a really cool technique--she heat-embossed a stamped image onto some metallic fibers. The image could then be cut out and used on a scrapbook page or card. It was pretty neat!

Prima and their never-ending genius and cuteness. These are paper-pieced embellishments and I really want that cat!

Cardstock is pretty.

Eric Erickson's booth had a really cool arrangement of scissors and flowers.

As you can see, I'm a bit mesmerized by them and their glitter pen friends. :D

Afterward, Linda had to go, but Brian and I went with Kristi and Chris to eat at Cracker Barrel. It was fun! A great day spent with great new friends!

OK, seriously, this is the year this house is getting painted, by God. We have decided on yellow for the living room. We picked up some paint swatches over the weekend and are currently studying them.

Now we just need a really tall friend or a ladder. Or both. ;D

LWW Scrappers February Meeting

We had a nice little meeting yesterday! We only had three there, but another member stopped by before the meeting was over, too. We had fun! We played with the Cricut, and shared supplies and learned new techniques from each other! I am happy we started this little group. Here are some pics from yesterday:

Appointment with dentist on March 10th. Hope they can work me in sooner. Advil is doing its best to keep the pain at bay. Hope it can keep helping me.

I haven't shared any work in a while! Sorry 'bout that. Most of my work lately has been for Scrap n' Art, so I can't share it just yet! :D

This sweet girl is so adorable. She just comes into the office, lies down on the floor, crosses her little paws and stares at me.

She is a little slow, as in, she rode the short bus to our house. But she is precious. Sometimes she jumps into the windowsill and smashes her head against the window glass. She can't help it. She is just a little slow.

I often ask her what's in there, under those spots between her ears. She and I both know the answer is "not much". Marshmallow fluff? Bless her heart.

We love her even more because she's "special". She can't meow; she only grunts. She has problems, but she's our sweet baby.

Her sweet little pink nose gets me every time. :D

Wow, What An Exciting Week!

This week, Brian was on vacation. Monday was our anniversary (13 years!). Tuesday, Mama and Ginger came to spend the night for...Wednesday, which was IKEA Day!! Thursday was a rest day (and I had an awful migraine the whole day, ugh!) and then today, Friday, we got SNOW in Middle Georgia!!! Again! For the second year in a row! That is extremely rare. Today's snowfall was much more than last year's, however.

Here are some photos to recap the highlights of the week:

IKEA!!! We took our new 50 mm prime lens with us and captured some really great photos.

Here is IKEA from the car as we were driving up. I was so excited to see my IKEA again that I had to snap a picture!! :D

Then, today was a very rare snow day!!! This happens so infrequently in central Georgia. We did have snow last year, but this snowfall today was a lot more than that. We had so much fun, taking pics, video, and building a snowgirl named Maude.

Let This Be Our Destiny...

Thirteen years ago today, I married my best friend and soulmate. We are very blessed and lucky, because every day is full of love and happiness together. Not a lot of people have that.

Our wedding invitation and reception napkins shared a sentiment that would turn out to be a promise, a vow all its own to the way we live our lives together. It was true then, and it's still true today.

It reads:

Let this be our destiny...
To love, to live
To begin each new day together,
to share our
lives forever

And we have. And we will. Until forever.

Happy Anniversary to my best friend and love of my life.

Scrappin', Friends and FUN!

Today, I co-held my first Lake Wildwood Scrappers meeting!! I recently met another scrapper who lives out here, named Kristi, and we got the idea to put this little group together. We had our first meeting today and it went really well! We had five people there, total, but we're hoping it will grow.

There were a couple beginners there that seemed inspired when they left, so yay! It's always great to turn people on to what a fun and therapeutic hobby scrapping is.

Another One Bites The Dust

Another hairdryer, that is. You may remember this post about when my hairdryer died. You might even remember this scrapbook layout I did about the whole unpleasant situation. That was not quite a year and a half ago, and that new Revlon I bought? Showing signs of early demise.

A couple days ago, I noticed it sounded *very* sick when it was used on the high setting, like, lots of rattling, shaking and terroristic threats to my hair. The low setting, however, is much nicer, so at least it's still *useable*. However. On the high setting, it takes about 5 minutes to dry my hair. On the low setting, it takes closer to 15. Maybe 20. So you see the obvious problem here. Unless I wanted to take a chance on the hairdryer blowing up in my hand while using it on the high setting, or, I wanted to just resign to a life of extremely long and angsty blow-drying, I would need to get a new hairdryer. Again.

In case you don't remember, I LOVED my Conair. I didn't get a Conair this last time because I was desperate, choosing from the selection that Wal-Mart had. Well, not this time, peeps. I knew I must seek out the Conair. Brian and I went to Target last night because I figured they'd have a better selection than Wal-Mart. Bingo.

A whole wall of dryers, curlers, and other hair accoutrement was there on display, not just with adequate stock--they were out of the boxes as samples you could hold and try out. So, of course, I did. :D

Brian took that picture with the camera on his phone. It's craptacular!!

(Brian also had Happy Fun Time throughout Target taking pictures of random things, then posting them on his blog with hilarious descriptions if you wanna check that out, too.)

Anyway, that Conair is almost identical to my loved-and-lost one. Unfortunately, they discontinued my old one, so I couldn't get that exact model, but this one was very similar. This made me happy. Can't you see the glee on my face?!

Plus, it had a nifty little orange clearance sticker on it. Sweet.

I got that one, haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but I have no doubt it will be awesome.

This concludes your newest installment in my hairdryer saga. Hopefully the next chapter is far, far away from being written.
